Lightweight Concrete
Lightweight Concrete Info...
A lightweight concrete is one which simply weighs less than a similar volume
of 'standard' concrete. If a standard concrete weighs about 150 pounds per
cubic foot, the same volume of a lightweight concrete may weigh in the range of
90-120 pounds.
Lightweight concrete can be produced using various lightweight
aggregates.
Lightweight aggregates originate from either:
Natural materials such as volcanic pumice
Thermal treatment of clay, slate or shale
Manufacture from industrial by-products such as fly ash
Processing of industrial by-products such as slag
Lightweight concretes can many times be used in the same manner as
conventional concretes and obtain strengths consistent with conventional
concrete.
Benefits of using lightweight concretes include:
Reduction in dead loads placed on structure by concrete
Improved thermal properties
Improved fire resistance
Reduction of formwork and bracing due to lower weight
